FONTANA, CA – With March Madness wrapping up in NCAA basketball, the month is equally exciting in the world of high school 7-on-7 football on the West Coast.
Passing Down hosted a regional tournament Sunday as it heads toward its Best of the West 8 event at the end of April, the first one to include teams from outside of California. The day at Ralph Lewis Sports Complex in Fontana, California featured 64 teams scrapping it out with Pro Way Hot Boys being crowned champions at the end of it all, beating Ground Zero Panoramic for a bid at Best of the West.
Despite the loss, defending champions Ground Zero Panoramic are still awarded a slot at Best of the West along with BSN Sports, Premium Legends, All-American Pride and Pro Way CV.
Football Hotbed was able to catch some of the action as BSN Sports (Mater Dei) beat Pro Way Sizzle in an early round game. Quarterback JT Daniels was poised as he led his offense through against a skilled and speedy Pro Way team.
Later in the day, 760 Elite danced away from Ground Zero the Process led by some smooth moves from wide receiver and defensive back Nick Foster who used his small stature to his advantage as he slipped through defenders for some big plays.
The day wasn’t without controversy as Ground Zero’s sideline claimed a 760 Elite player was touched upfield before a long run and Team Makasi and Elite Athlete Sport Academy argued over the final down of their game. The refs were on high alert all day.
Among those in the crowd were Passing Down alum and incoming USC running back Stephen Carr.
Passing Down heads up North to Los Medanos College in Pittsburg, California March 26 and then returns to Ralph Lewis April 15 to fill in the field. Best of the West kicks off April 30 at Irvine Stadium.
