(8) Southridge Spartans (1-1) vs. (9) Miami Palmetto Panthers (3-0)
Thursday at Southridge Park, 7 p.m.
Here’s a very intriguing game. Perhaps one of the most interesting and most significant games going on in South Florida this week.
Miami Palmetto remains one of my dark horse teams to do damage this season – and this is the game that will prove if I was right for drinking the Kool-Aid.
The Panthers are coming off a tough, double-overtime win over Coral Gables. While I’m sure some inside the Panthers’ locker room expected they’d have an easier go at it with the Cavaliers, but a win is a win and Gables is tough squad – despite their sub .500 record.
Playing a tough contest like that, I think, will only help Palmetto heading into this week. It serves as a great tune-up because it knocked the rust off – against a quality opponent – and it got the players back in the football groove.
Southridge, on the other hand, will be taking the field for the first time since their September 1st game against North Miami.
The Spartans’ layoff could end up being the thing that derails them in this game.
Putting their performance against the Pioneers into the proper perspective, Southridge’s offense appeared to still be finding its rhythm. The images of their offense faltering all over the field against Cardinal Gibbons in week one are ingrained in my mind and continue to be hard for me look past.
Practice is good and the Spartans have had extra time to prepare for this game, I just think Palmetto is in a better place. Additionally, I think the Panthers will get the big plays needed from running back Trey Flowers and receiver Ivan Thomas to combat whatever Mark “Noodles” Pope does.
Bald Prediction = Palmetto wins 20-16
