It was an eventful week two of spring practice for the Miami Hurricanes football program. The new Miami coaching staff is assembled, and it can be argued that the staff is one of the best in the country. Including Head Coach Mario Cristobal, defensive coordinator Kevin Steele and linebackers coach/co-defensive coordinator Charlie Strong bring in about 20 years of head coaching experience alone.
This week Cristobal invited plenty with head coaching experience to the campus of the University of Miami.
Coaching Clinic Draws Impressive List Of Guest Speakers
Cristobal and his staff hosted a coaches clinic where high school football coaches gathered to share ideas and ultimately introduce the Miami coaches as a whole to the world. Coaches observed practice Saturday at Greentree Practice Field.
The clinic included hall of Famer and former Miami head coach Jimmy Johnson who led the Hurricanes to its second national championship in school history in 1987.
Other guest speakers also included former LSU head coach Ed Orgeron who coached the Miami defensive line from 1988 to 1992 winning two national titles. Orgeron most recently was the head coach of the LSU 2019 national championship team, which is considered one of the best of all time. Other speakers on hand were long-time special teams coach with the Miami Dolphins Dan Rizzi, and 2021 super bowl champion Los Angeles Rams Head Coach Sean McVay.

“Our players got some wise words from Sean McVay that really hit home,” said Cristobal in a post-practice presser Saturday. “We look forward to learn a lot from him. We always learn a lot from Coach Johnson. Coach Orgeron did an awesome job. Coach Rizzi was spectacular teaching special teams this morning. All in all just a lot accomplished.”
The coaches on campus were among the many grabbing headlines this week. Hall of Famers Ed Reed, chief of staff for the Canes, and Edgerrin James were also on campus speaking with current players and coaches.

“To have guys like Ed Reed and Jason to be in the fold in our staff, first of all, they are five-star people,” said defensive line coach Joe Salave’a.
Pro Football Hall of Famer Jason Taylor is starting to make his presence felt in Coral Gables as well. The defensive end is pushing true sophomore defensive tackle Leonard Taylor to be better than the previous year.

“He is so far from being his final polished self,” said Salave’a of Leonard Taylor mid-week. “He’s being pushed and he doesn’t mind it. We got to continue to embody that spirit otherwise this process will slow down and we are not trying to slow down. We came here to push and continue to grind and those guys got to have a ultimate respect and big picture of why we are doing it this way.”
Washington Twins Pledge Commitment To The 2023 Class
Four-star athlete Robby Washington and three-star twin brother Bobby out of Miami Killian High School committed to the University of Miami Thursday. The double commitment boosted the 23’ class to the 18th ranked class in the country and third in the ACC behind Louisville and Florida State. Miami has four total commitments thus far with Antonio Tripp, (OL, Owings Mills, MD) also committing earlier this month. Lamar Seymore (WR, Miami Northwestern, FL) remains committed to ‘The U.’

What The Twins Bring To The Table
Both contributed to Miami Killian completing an undefeated 2021 regular season. Robby is an all-around athlete that is deadly in the return game. Once he has a full head of steam, there are not many that can catch this explosive athlete. Washington is a nifty runner in the open field and has the ability to stretch the defense. He is a potential home run threat on every down and brings a similar skill set similar to current Miami wide receivers Brashard Smith and Xavier Restrepo.

Bobby Washington (featured image) is more of a physical presence (6-3, 210) that imposes his will from the linebacker position. When he locks in on the ball carrier, Bobby detonates like a heat-seeking missile. The talented tackler can also defend in pass coverage and has a chance to play middle or outside linebacker. The talented defender has a chance to be a consistent starter for years to come.
