Mainland Comes from Behind to Beat St. Augustine, Crowned 3S FHSAA Champs

Tallahassee, FL– With only two seconds remaining in the game, senior place-kicker Jacob Gettman knocked in a game winning field goal that lifted Mainland to a 21-19 win over St. Augustine in the Florida High School Football Association’s 3-Suburban classification.  It’s Mainland’s first win since 2003, a team that head coach Travis Roland was a part of. For the St. Augustine Yellow Jackets, their undefeated season came to a very disappointing end.

After the game, Mainland players and coaches reflected on the difficulty of overcoming the same type of disappointing loss they delivered this year to St. Augustine, last year. They lost a very close state championship game in the same classification to Lake Wales.

Blue-chip recruit, LJ McCray, a 2024 DL, spoke about the courage his team displayed coming from behind and trusting that the game wasn’t over when St. Augustine scored what appeared to be a the game clinching touchdown late in the fourth quarter of the game.  He and fellow elite prospect teammate, Zavier Mincey displayed the confidence that has coaches across American salivating for their talents.
