Coral Gables, FL – Mark Richt’s two day camp this weekend held drills with offensive/defensive lineman and a seven on seven tournament with area high schools. Glades Central brought home the title for Palm Beach County as they defeated Everglades Prep 11-2. This was a very competitive tournament as several players were cramping up in the 90 degree weather.

Although seven on seven competitions drew the most eyes on a hot Sunday in South Florida, defensive coordinator Manny Diaz was most concerned with the players that play in the trenches as this is where most games are won and lost.

“Everyone loves seven on seven, but the game is still about blocking and getting off blocks,” said Coach Diaz. “In the fall these lineman have more to do with winning then seven on sevens.”

The Hurricanes are looking for a certain type of player that can fill voids on the defensive line. In a game where players seem to just bigger at a younger age, size does matter.

“The game comes down to twitchiness, suddenness and change of direction,” said Diaz. “There is a size that you have to be functionally to survive, but if you don’t have the movement skills in this day in age it’s not good enough. The top guys have to be strong enough to hold up against the run and at the same time have shake to be a factor on the pass rush.”

Camp continues next weekend on the campus of the University of Miami.
