Chaminade Shuts Out Edison, Advances to State Semis

Miami, FL — Miami Edison’s lone state championship was won on the campus of Miami Dade College North Campus 50 years ago. In 2020, the Red Raiders, led by Head Coach Luther Campbell, were looking to bring a championship back to Little Haiti for the first time since 1970.

Unfortunately for Red Raiders fans, this would not be a championship year for Edison.

The dynasty of Hollywood Chaminade-Madonna shutout Edison 28-0 at Traz Powell Stadium Friday night.  The Lions advance to the 3A state semifinal for the fifth year in a row and are aiming for a fourth straight state title.  The shutout was Chaminade’s second of the year and the fifth time the Lions held their opponents to single digits.

“We got some guys that have been here and know what takes (to win a title),” said Head Coach Dameon Jones.  “My defense has been playing lights out all year and they’ve been holding us down while we were getting our offense together, now our offense has picked up and this is the time we’re peaking, so we are doing it at the right time.

Coach Jones’s workhorse running back Thad Franklin, a 2021 Miami Hurricanes commit, was out for this game with a hamstring injury and did not play.  Replacing Franklin for the night was sophomore Jonathan Harris and freshman running back Davion Gause.  Gause (5-10, 197), commonly known as “Bullet,” scored two touchdowns in the game and was a problem for the Edison defense running the offense from the wildcat formation.

“Every time I got the ball I tried to make a good play,” said Gause.  “We practiced (the wildcat) this week.  It was Thaddius Franklin’s formation, he went down, Coach Roe put me in and that’s when I made big plays.”

Gause scored back-to-back touchdowns just before halftime on an 11-yard run and on a one-yard plunge with the team’s first possession in the second half.  Bullet’s second score would give the Lions a 21-0 lead.

“They’ve been running the ball year for this moment,” said Coach Jones of his running backs.  “We’ve been getting those guys ready all year.  They didn’t let us down today.”

Chaminade opened up the scoring with a pretty pass from Howard commit Jaylon Tolbert to Edwin Joseph.

The Lions would erase any chance of a Red Raider comeback as senior defensive back Torrie Cox Jr. gathered a tipped ball and ran by would-be tacklers for an explosive 78-yard pick-six in the fourth quarter.  Junior linebacker Dylan Reid registered a strip-sack and strong tackle on fourth down inside the five yard-line in the second half helped to preserve the shut out.

Chaminade (7-1) will travel to Tampa Berkley Prep next Friday.  Edison ends its season (4-2) with just two losses.
