FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — South Florida high school football will occupy the national stage this week as some of the country’s most accomplished programs arrive for the fifth annual Broward County National High School Football Showcase.
The event began August 21 with Mandarin defeating McArthur 38-21. It resumes Thursday and continues through Saturday with eight games featuring teams from Florida, Georgia, California, Colorado, Illinois, Nevada and Texas.
The field includes perennial state champions, nationally ranked programs and dozens of prospects holding major college offers. Two Saturday games will air nationally on ESPN2, while the remaining matchups will be available through BECON TV, with select games also streamed by League Ready.
For South Florida, this is more than an opportunity to play attractive nonconference games. It is another chance for one of the country’s richest football regions to defend its reputation against respected programs from across the nation.
A Key Player in the Broward Showcase
Much of the Showcase’s growth can be credited to co-founder Dr. Kevin Perry, whose vision has helped transform the event into one of Broward County football’s most important annual platforms. What began as an opportunity for local programs to test themselves against outside competition has become a nationally relevant showcase featuring powerhouse teams, ESPN2 broadcasts, major recruiting exposure and opponents traveling from across the country. Perry’s work has helped place Broward County’s schools, athletes and football tradition in front of national audiences while creating meaningful opportunities for the entire community. The Showcase’s continued expansion is further evidence that Broward County is not simply producing elite talent—it has developed an event capable of attracting and hosting the best in America.
Here are the five games Football Hotbed will be watching most closely.
Chaminade-Madonna vs. Sierra Canyon

McArthur High School, Hollywood

Few programs have represented South Florida more consistently on the national stage than Chaminade-Madonna.
Coach Dameon Jones has built a program accustomed to playing elite opponents, producing Power Four recruits and competing for state championships. The Lions appeared in 10 consecutive FHSAA championship games from 2016 through 2025, winning seven titles during that stretch before Cardinal Newman snapped their four-year championship run last December.
Sierra Canyon travels from California carrying its own national reputation. The Trailblazers regularly compete against many of the best programs on the West Coast and arrive with a roster featuring major recruiting targets.
The matchup should provide an immediate test for Chaminade’s speed and young talent. Among the Lions to watch are versatile playmaker Ah’Mari Stevens and 2029 defensive back Derrick Jones Jr., one of South Florida’s highest-ranked young prospects.
Chaminade has rarely avoided a national challenge. Thursday’s game gives its latest group another opportunity to show that the program remains among the country’s most talented and resilient.
American Heritage vs. East St. Louis

American Heritage School, Plantation

American Heritage enters Friday night seeking a response.
The Patriots opened their season with a 24-7 loss to two-time defending Class 6A champion West Boca Raton. The final score, however, did not completely reflect the effort of the Heritage defense. The Patriots produced three goal-line stands and spent much of the game operating at a significant time-of-possession disadvantage.
That defense will face another demanding assignment against East St. Louis.
The Illinois powerhouse opened its season with a dramatic 42-23 victory over Chicago Mount Carmel. East St. Louis trailed 23-14 entering the fourth quarter before scoring 28 unanswered points.
Ronnie Gomiller rushed for four touchdowns, including three in the final period, while quarterback Reece Shanklin passed for 185 yards and two scores. Highly recruited running back Myson Johnson-Cook is another major concern if available after leaving the opener with an injury.
American Heritage will need another strong performance from its defensive front. Micah Price was an important part of the Patriots’ interior effort against West Boca, while freshman receiver Ryan Duncans showed early promise in his first varsity game against a nationally rated opponent.
The Patriots are young in several important areas, but Friday provides an immediate opportunity to turn a difficult opening result into a national statement.
Columbus vs. Bishop Gorman

St. Thomas Aquinas High School, Fort Lauderdale

Bishop Gorman will arrive in South Florida as one of the hottest teams in the country.
The Las Vegas powerhouse opened with a 41-0 victory and then defeated St. John Bosco 38-28 in a matchup between two nationally prominent programs. That result reinforced Gorman’s position as one of the leading contenders for a mythical national championship.
Columbus will not be intimidated by the name across the field.
The Explorers have developed into one of Florida’s most consistent championship programs under head coach Dave Dunn. They opened the season with a convincing 45-7 victory over Coral Gables and possess the size, discipline and defensive talent required to challenge a national opponent.
The game also places Columbus defensive back Amir Sears on a major stage. Sears was one of the featured athletes at Football Hotbed’s fifth annual Media Day and is part of a talented Explorers secondary that will be tested by Gorman’s speed and offensive balance.
Columbus will need to limit explosive plays, avoid turnovers and remain within striking distance entering the fourth quarter. Gorman is capable of punishing mistakes quickly, but the Explorers have the physical makeup and postseason experience to make this one of Saturday’s most compelling games.
St. Thomas Aquinas vs. DeSoto

St. Thomas Aquinas High School, Fort Lauderdale

Florida versus Texas will provide the Showcase’s closing act.
St. Thomas Aquinas enters after opening its season with a 42-0 shutout. The Raiders remain one of the most decorated programs in American high school football, having won 17 state championships and produced a long list of college and NFL players.
DeSoto arrives from Texas with similar expectations. The Eagles have established themselves as one of the state’s premier programs and bring the size, speed and roster depth required to compete against Aquinas.
The battle in the trenches could decide the game. DeSoto’s offensive front is headlined by five-star Texas A&M pledge Mark Matthews, while four-star Notre Dame pledge Julius Jones is another major prospect to follow.
St. Thomas Aquinas will counter with its familiar combination of speed, physicality and depth. The Raiders are rarely dependent on a single prospect. They rotate capable players at nearly every position and have built their national reputation through disciplined, complete-team football.
The ESPN2 audience will see two talent-producing regions with very different identities. Texas football is often associated with size, facilities and large-school depth. South Florida’s reputation has been built around speed, athleticism and an extraordinary number of elite prospects.
Saturday night will offer another chapter in that debate.
West Broward vs. McEachern

Miramar High School, Miramar

West Broward enters the season with something to prove after reaching the 2025 Class 6A state championship game.
The Bobcats’ breakthrough season ended with a 31-0 loss to West Boca, but their run to the championship established West Broward as more than a promising program. The challenge now is sustaining that standard while replacing key contributors.
McEachern brings a talented roster from Georgia and gives West Broward an early opportunity to demonstrate that last season’s run was the beginning of a program ascent rather than a one-year breakthrough.
The Bobcats must establish their running game, protect the football and prevent McEachern’s athletes from creating explosive plays in space. West Broward does not need to reproduce last year’s entire championship run in one night, but a victory over a respected Georgia opponent would reinforce the program’s growing stature.

The Showcase’s depth extends beyond Football Hotbed’s five featured games.
Coconut Creek vs. True North
Friday, August 28 | 7 p.m. at Coconut Creek High School
This all-Florida matchup gives Coconut Creek and True North an opportunity to earn a notable early-season win. Coconut Creek’s roster includes 2028 running back Cayden Daniels, a developing prospect with the ability to contribute as a runner and receiver.
Western vs. Pine Creek
Friday, August 28 | 7 p.m. at McArthur High School
Western will carry Broward County’s flag against Pine Creek of Colorado. The Wildcats have consistently produced college prospects and playoff-caliber teams. Controlling the pace and adjusting to an unfamiliar opponent will be central to Western’s chances.
Archbishop McCarthy vs. Jacksonville Bolles
Friday, August 28 | 7 p.m. at Archbishop McCarthy High School
This matchup features two disciplined private-school programs with championship expectations. Bolles owns one of Florida’s most accomplished football traditions, while Archbishop McCarthy continues developing into a major South Florida contender.
