Week one in Florida high school football was entertaining to say the least. Dade County versus Broward County were one sided as far as the county that came out on top in South Florida. Miami Carol City ended American Heritage‘s 28-game winning streak in convincing fashion. Running back Nay’Quan Wright earned Football Hotbed MVP honors as he had explosive runs throughout the game.
Miami Central scored a flurry of touchdowns to defeat Cardinal Gibbons (Fort Lauderdale), Miami Northwestern behind a big game from QB Isaiah Velez, defeated Miramar 30-12 and Miami Booker T. Washington out scored Dillard (Fort Lauderdale) 36-20.
Deerfield Beach showed just how great their defense is with a strong outing against 3A state favorite Chaminade-Madonna (Hollywood) and St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale) dominated DMV power DeMatha (MD) 38-0.
Dominating defensive shutouts in Palm Beach County sets up an intriguing week 2 matchup between Dwyer (Palm Beach Gardens) and Atlantic (Delray). Dwyer shutout Park Vista 40-0 and Atlantic had a strong performance shutting out Palm Beach Central (Wellington) 14-0.
Defending 7A champion Venice lost to Vero Beach over the weekend 42-20 in one of the surprises of the weekend. The Champions of 4A Raines (Jacksonville) started their season on the wrong foot with a one point loss to Lee (Jacksonville) 16-15. Piper (Sunrise) held off Miami Norland after jumping out to 24-0 lead to win 24-21. Golden Gate (Naples) thumped Immokalee 37-8 making a strong statement on the west side of Florida.
Wekiva (Apopka) and Trinity Christian (Jacksonville) earned tough victories to remain in the top 25.
