The inaugural Freedom Bowl held at Milton High School in Fulton County Georgia, was a series of football games between out of state schools over the Labor Day weekend. The proceeds of the event went to wounded veterans and their families. Florida was well represented with some of the state powers participating. American Heritage (Plantation), Chaminade-Madonna (Hollywood) and Wekiva (Apopka) all came out with victories against out of state foes. Stoneman Douglas (Parkland) also came out victorious with a 30-6 victory over St. Matthews out of Ontario, Canada. Unfortunately, coming out on the losing side of the Freedom Bowl games were Cardinal Gibbons (Fort Lauderdale), losing to Milton 48-21 and Mainland (Daytona), losing to Bob Jones (Madison, AL) 39-36.
Other Florida teams traveling out of state that returned home with victories were Bolles (Jacksonville) who defeated North Hempstead (GA), Crestview defeated St. Martin (MS) and Deerfield Beach defeated Buford (GA).
Back in Florida there were a few upsets that are worth noting. Columbus (Miami) defeated defending 6A state champion Miami Northwestern 23-14 and Treasure Coast (Port St. Lucie) defeated 4A state runner up Cocoa 34-29. Atlantic (Delray) flexed their muscles against Dwyer (Palm Beach Gardens) in the Football Hotbed Game of the Week. The top four in our poll remain the same as Columbus moves into the top five with their victory at Tropical Park.
Top Performers
Henry Bryant, DT, Atlantic (Delray) – The junior defender made a key stop on quarterback Gio Richardson in the fourth quarter that sealed the game. He was in the Dwyer backfield causing disruption all night.
Daniel Carter, RB, St. Thomas Aquinas – Scored two touchdowns on 13 carries for 81 yards. The uncommitted senior back scored on a 36-yard touchdown to put his team up 21-0 with eleven seconds left in the 1st Qtr.
Dashaun Davis, WR, Deerfield Beach – The Appalachian State commit had two touchdown catches that won the game for the Bucks. In the fourth quarter, Davis caught a 41-yard touchdown catch to put his team up 13-7 with 7:28 left in the game. Buford would take the lead 14-13, but Davis would strike again with a 77-yard touchdown catch and run for the game winning score at the 1:49 mark.
Joey Fleurjuste, RB, Treasure Coast (Port St. Lucie) – The junior scored the second of his two touchdowns with 29 seconds left to lift his team to victory over 4A state title contender Cocoa.
Henry Parrish Jr., RB, Columbus (Miami) – Ran all over the Bulls for 214 yards on 23 carries including a 91-yarder for a touchdown. He also had a 13-yard touchdown run to clinch the game with 2:43 left to play.
Supreme Richardson, RB, Wekiva (Apopka) – The 2020 running back carried his team to a well earned victory over North Gwinnett (GA) carrying the ball 31 times for 114 yards.
Maurice Underwood, QB, Miami Central – Went 14-23 for 274 yards and three touchdowns. One of the Marshall commit’s touchdown strikes were to Anthony Fredrick that went for 72 yards. All touchdowns came in the second half as the score was a tight 6-5 at halftime.
Walter Wibon III, RB, Plant (Tampa) – The senior back ran for 177 yards on 19 carries in a dominating win over Robinson (Tampa). On their first drive, he carried the ball on every play and culminated the drive on a 45-yard touchdown run. He finished the game with three touchdowns.
Keon Zipperer, TE, Lakeland – The standout talent scored twice in the first quarter. The first on a touchdown catch and the other coming from a recovery on a blocked punt.
